What is Vision Midwifery?

We must invent never-before-seen maps and methods to navigate our never-before-seen circumstances and courageously accept a destination we can only partially understand.

Journey of Soul Initiation, by Bill Plotkin

Vision Midwifery is a holistic, soul-level approach to supporting the creation or transition of a vision.

You can vision midwife a project.
You can vision midwife an event.
You can vision midwife your life.
You can vision midwife your relationship.
You can vision midwife your business.

Basically, anywhere where vision and creative process meet, you can “midwife” or “be with” the process in a skillful way.

To “midwife” means to be with the “womb” or “woman”. And given the deep ancestral context of midwifery as a lineage, I hold the concept of Vision Midwifery through two distinct lenses:

  1. To be with the Woman: to be with the soul of the Earth, the primordial mother, as the world moves through ongoing ontological crisis and irreversible change.

  2. To be with the Womb: to be with the imaginal, the void, the unseen places that give birth to everything: visions, relationships, offerings, futures.

To be with the “womb” or “woman” of a vision—or with someone navigating their own visionary process—is to remember that regardless of sex or gender, each of us carries a soul-level thread that connects us to the Great Mother.

And when we bring vision forward from that place, we’re not just birthing good ideas, we’re tending to the materialization of the Earth’s dream for herself, through us.

For some, this concept may seem incredibly esoteric and unnecessarily mysterious. But underneath the mysticism lies a deep practicality.

To be a vision midwife is to know how to move with the tangible, tactile steps of creative process while also staying attuned to the spiritual dimensions of what is forming, dying, or gestating within a person, a group, or the Earth herself.
