Creative Vulnerability in Culturemaking

Visionary Grief, Willingness, and Witness

Celebrating Subtle Acts of Creative Devotion

From Artmaking to Organizing to Entrepreneurship

Creative Devotion is a monthly discussion series that acknowledges and celebrates the full range of subtle
creative acts that are required to progress the project of cultural change.

Because we know that change doesn’t just happen in the grand gestures. It happens in the eddies and the small consistent waves of devotion, repeating over and over again.

Each month, we invite you to engage with passionate, local creators who share their stories of using their creativity to overcome challenges, bridge cultural divides, and nurture a sense of wholeness and belonging in local culture.

These sessions seek to remind us all that even the most gentle acts of creative courage might serve to foster a more vibrant, empathetic, and interconnected world.

Spring + Summer Sessions

  • May 10th • 10 am • Kristin Anchors, Todd Joseph, Alison Dale

To take even one step toward bringing a vision to life can require a great deal of vulnerability. Because what if all fails? Or falls flat? Or doesn’t take? What if everyone leaves? Or hates it? Or hates me? We all ask some version of these very same questions. Some people say that all you need to pursue a vision is a plan. But, deep down, we all know that the creative process calls for so much more than that. There is so much risk tied up in trying to bring a vision to life. In this session of our series, we’ll explore how we negotiate Risk and Belonging in the creative process.

Grief is often what begins our projects. The wound speaks. And we ask ourselves why certain things don’t exist. Our grief meets us in the question. And sometimes what follows is our creative will. Sometimes, we create to fill the gap, to speak a new thing into the void. Sometimes the wound is a gateway into a new kind of microworld we’re exploring. Sometimes, vision is a response to a prayer we’re all praying somewhere inside of us. In this session of Creative Devotion, we will explore Grief and Vision and the creative process as prophetic practice.

Some of the tenderest people have the most brilliant ideas. And this is why we must have this conversation. What does it mean to pursue a path of entrepreneurship when the path has been carved in violence? How might honoring our neurocomplexity, the dearest nuances, and the sensitivities that lead us to creative process support the nurturance of the world we’re trying to weave together? We all know it – sensitivity is not fragility. It is a supernatural quality that when appreciated, loved, watered, and attuned, supports the evolution of our world. In this session of Creative Devotion, we will explore what it means to coexist with our primal sensitivities and our penchant to build. Howevery you identify on the highly sensitive spectrum, your voice is needed, your ideas are allowed.

Who are the land spirits? And what do they have to say about what vision is being developed? And what art is being created? How do we include their voices, their wisdom, their excitement, and their guidance in the ways we weave and craft the everyday? This is such an important conversation. We humans have often forgotten how to tune in and hear what the land is saying. We have forgotten that there is a living conversation happening just outside the window – a conversation that is intelligent, architectural, and full of wisdom. It’s time we remember. In this session of Creative Devotion, we will explore how we might acknowledge, celebrate, and collaborate with the land spirits in the ways we weave vision in this time.

The creative process is a prophetic practice. All of our actions today affect all of our experiences tomorrow. We know this. What is required for us to remember our futures? What reckoning is needed? What kinds of spaces long to be created? What kinds of Timeline Tenders do we need to become in order to preserve one shard of future for pleasure, for beauty, for nourishment, for wholeness, for truth, for togetherness, for love? In this session of Creative Devotion, we wil explore the world building magic of Stewarding Our Share Futures. This will be a time to imagine and craft the world we want to exist inside of.

Meet Your Host

Story Doula, Vision Midwife, and Ecosomatic Depth Guide

Welcome love, I’m Dajé Aloh. As a Memphis-born, Appalachian-cured storyteller, story doula, and ecosomatic depth guide; I am here to support seekers, lovers, crafters, and kin in finding and singing the deep song of their lives.

I do this in several domains: entrepreneurship, creative rites of passage, and musings on culturework and leadership in these times.

There are new stories, new ways, and new templates for meeting life that long to be born into our collective awareness. To nurture new stories, we must get low and listen. We must turn on the ears of the psyche, and call them forth from the deep.

This is my work as a story doula – calling forth true and deep liberation from the collective subconscious and bringing it into the light.
